Introduction

One of the things I noticed first about Grand Theft Auto V was how packed Los Santos feels even when you’re not actively doing anything. I could probably just drive around for an hour, cause problems, walk around side roads, or just watch the world respond without engaging with the core story.

And that’s still the magic of it. The game offers you a enormous sandbox to play in, then lets you decide what sort of sandbox experience you want to have.

Grand Theft Auto V is a open-world action game made by Rockstar North which combines a cinematic single-player story campaign with the eternally changing landscape of GTA Online. You’re driving through Los Santos and the country that surrounds it, encompassing city streets and highways, mountain ranges and beaches, farms and military zones, and many a hidden nook and cranny to explore.

That sense of freedom is part of the appeal.

Driving is especially significant because Los Santos is built for movement. A smattering of cars, bikes, aircraft, boats, and other vehicles will get you through the world in a variety of ways. The world also expands or contracts based on where you go, so you can find yourself in what feels like an entirely different game when you drive from the city to the country.

Combat uses guns, melee attacks, vehicles, and the environment itself to outmaneuver opponents. You can crouch behind cover, switch out weapons, control multiple characters in single missions, and approach opponents from different angles.

Why It Still Works So Well

And it’s the little things.

Radio stations, pedestrians, encounters, weather effects, animals, traffic, shops, optional activities, and a litany of minute details can make the world come alive even if you’re just moving through it.

The PC version enables this experience further since you can tailor the presentation to your hardware. A strong machine can push high visual quality and consistent performance, while gamers with less capable systems can dial back settings to balance visuals and responsiveness.
